Matt – Las Madres only does one pick for themselves and all their clients. Everyone tries to make a consensus about the right day, but most buyers want it riper than we do. In 2018 I convinced them to pick just for us. So we did 100% whole cluster that we handpicked ourselves. The next week they picked for us and they picked for themselves and the following week everyone else picked. I want to pick on acid. I want to prove that you can make a fruit forward bright California wine that is 14% alcohol and you don’t add acid to it and it still has everything you expect out of a great California wine.
Ben – The Syrah is amazing because it can play both sides. It is a great ribeye wine, but it is also great with chicken or even by itself. Our end goal is to be able to make wines that are good by themselves and of course great with food.
LAS MADRES VINEYARD: If you are going to make cool climate Syrah in California the Las Madres Vineyard is top of the line. They sell to Thomas Rivers Brown, who makes some of the most elegant and culty Syrahs around, with coinciding hefty price tags. The vineyard is shaped like a bowl, which allows the cool fog to hang out longer in the mornings resulting in rich dense fruit.
