It is true that Primitivo is the same grape as Zinfandel, or its Croatian name Tribidrag. For as many names as it has, it has that many styles as well. This wine is not the Zinfandel that I think of when I think of big, over ripe, jammy Zinfandels. This wine is super bright and fresh bursting with strawberry deliciousness, just barely ripe  plum and black cherry with a dark brambly blackberry streak running through it. High acid, mouth watering and refreshing, this wine is light on its feet and can stand a little chill.

Dry farmed, own-rooted, no-spray viticulture in Kenwood. Winemaking: 100% destemmed, tiny water add, macerated for 10 days (standard 2x PD per day), pressed before dryness, aged in Neutral French Barrels and Puncheons, Bottled after 8 months elevage with 30 ppm SO2. Vegan.

140 cases produced.

2021 Fres.co Primitivo

$35.00

I got introduced to Ross Cannard who’s a local Sonoman. His dad, Bob Cannard used to be a teacher at the JC but the main thing he did was grow all the produce for Chez Panisse. Ross is just in the process of taking that over from his dad. He also worked for Phil Cotorri, and so he knows how to grow grapes. He was leasing this vineyard that was Primitivo. It was in Kenwood, dry farmed, and crazily enough, he wasn’t doing any spray passes. It was a worthwhile vineyard. I wanted to take a risk and try making wine from it. So I made a rosé and a red, and they came out great. I have made it every year since and that’s become my flagship.”

We're on a break!

Don’t worry. We are coming back better than ever in 2024!

While Ownroot Collective  will continue to focus on winemaker side-projects, we will now offer 4 shipments per year, shipped automatically.

You can still shop for wine any time, and we will still offer lots of content, connection, and virtual tastings with winemakers.

We hope you will join us for our newest adventure!
