Matt – I love blending because if you make wine in the Napa Valley you don’t usually do a lot of blending because most wines are single vineyard, single varietal. It has been fun- we have housemates and friends come taste and then we have dinner and make the rough blend and confirm it later. We want to not overthink it and not get pulled down by 1 percent of Grenache making a massive difference. Simplicity is golden in that way.
Ben – The blends for the GSM wine has changed so much. The percentages are different every year. It would be really interesting to taste all the vintages side by side.
Matt – Though there is a consistency of style through the years. I always say I want my hipster girlfriend to like the wine, and I want my dad to like the wine. I want generational appeal.
FORE FAMILY VINEYARD: Located at 3000 feet (that is REALLY high) in Lake County’s Red Hills, this vineyard is farmed by Jim Fore who worked in Napa for years and is known to be hyper meticulous. The soils are rocky and volcanic and the elevation provides intense UV leading to intense and concentrated fruit.
ADLER SPRINGS VINEYARD: A beacon for winemakers, this iconic vineyard is up in the Lost Coast area of Mendocino. This rugged, remote and high altitude vineyard is 140 acres that the owner, Stu Bewley, says is farmed like a Bonsai farm.
